The Department of Women Studies was introduced at Eastern theological College Jorhat from July 1996 as one of the programmes of the College with a Purpose to critique and to address acute women’s issues/ concerns in the churches and society theologically. The department functions with the following aims and objective

_ To conscientize and to promote gender Justice theology by creating awareness among the students and the College community; _ To develop women’s concerns as an integral part of theological education by integrating gender issues in the theological curriculum;
_ To encourage women for fuller participation in the ministry of the church and decision making processes;
_ To establish a network among the scholars theological teachers and the Church leaders towards a united effort to research and publications;
_ To create a Forum for Women of North East India through which we can raise voices on Justice issues;
_ To impart basic Christian Knowledge and home making to the students wives by organizing various programmes.

The department is engaged with conducting seminars/ Workshops in both academic and grassroot levels courses for students, wives with a purpose to impart basic biblical knowledge to become more effective minister; s wife and partner in ministry; and integration of gender issues in the College curriculum such as:
1. Introduction to Feminist Theology
2. Feminist Hermeneutics and Feminist Ecclesiology
3. Interdisciplinary course related to gender Issues
4. Women in the History of Christianity (M. Th.)
Women study Centre also publishes book focused on women’ s concerns and the theologizing from women’ s perspectives. Already four series has been published by the Center.
